The Two Coffee Mugs
Some memories are poured one cup at a time.
________________________________________________________________________________________________
Every Saturday morning, Emma went to Pop-Pop's house.
She never knocked. The front door was always unlocked, and the smell of pancakes found her before he did.
"Morning, kiddo," he called from the kitchen.
"Morning, Pop-Pop."
Saturday mornings never changed.
Pancakes sizzling on the stove.
Bacon crackling in the skillet.
An old radio humming softly in the background.
And coffee.
Well... coffee for Pop-Pop.
Hot chocolate for Emma.
There was something else that never changed.
Every Saturday, Pop-Pop reached into the cabinet and took down two coffee mugs.
He filled the first one with black coffee, just the way he liked it.
The second mug remained empty.
He carefully placed it across the table, directly in front of the chair no one ever sat in.
Emma noticed it the first Saturday.
Then the second.
Then the twentieth.
She never asked.
Some questions felt too important to interrupt.
One rainy morning, thunder rumbled in the distance as Pop-Pop set the empty mug in its usual place.
Emma looked at it for a long moment before finally speaking.
"Pop-Pop?"
He looked up.
"Whose mug is that?"
A gentle smile crossed his face.
"Your grandmother's."
Emma glanced at the empty chair.
"But... she's been gone a long time."
I know."
There wasn't sadness in his voice.
Only love.
"Your grandmother used to say coffee tasted better when someone was sitting across the table from you. She always said it wasn't really about the coffee—it was about sharing the morning."
He chuckled softly.
"She also complained every Saturday that it was too hot... then she'd drink every last drop."
Emma laughed.
"So why do you still put her mug out?"
Pop-Pop looked toward the rain tapping against the window.
"Because love doesn't always leave when people do."
The kitchen grew quiet.
Not the uncomfortable kind of quiet.
The peaceful kind.
Emma stood, picked up her mug of hot chocolate, and walked around the table.
Instead of returning to her chair, she sat beside the empty mug.
Pop-Pop looked at her with a puzzled smile.
I figured," she said softly, "you shouldn't have to drink coffee alone."
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Pop-Pop reached across the table and gently squeezed her hand.
Outside, the rain kept falling.
Inside, the pancakes grew cold.
The coffee cooled.
But somehow...
the kitchen had never felt warmer.
